THANKS FOR A GREAT YEAR!

It wasn’t that long ago that we were being introduced onstage as “up-and-coming”.  We never quite knew what to make of this: coming to where? Over the years (and as folk musicians), we’ve discovered that success is measured by how fulfilled we (and the audience) are by the music, and by the company that we keep.  In these regards we’ve been incredibly lucky.

Things have changed since the “up-and-coming” days.  Life as a parent of young children is thick with routine, with the slow shift of priorities, with the re-shaping of life already lived.  The threads of the past that survive the prioritisation must be strong to jostle for position alongside these new human beings and their wants, needs, mess, nappies, gorgeous smiles and fragile hearts.

2015 has felt like some kind of arrival, perhaps at a milestone – but it’s the success of creating a work that mirrors, through folksong and with honesty, what it is to be empassioned, informed, exhausted harmony-singing folk musician mothers in 2015.  This feels like a big achievement!  The album “Declaration”, and its reception, feel strangely like a celebration of hopeful light shining on hard things.

What’s happened in 2015?  The recording and production of “Declaration”, with its many months of collaboration with producer Luke Plumb coming to fruition with album launches at the National Folk Festival in Canberra, Candelo Village Festival, and the Spotted Mallard in Melbourne.  We’re so grateful to everyone who has helped us by listening, buying, sending messages, giving us airtime on radio, making cups of tea, cuddling children, and writing reviews.

A special thank you to those at ABC Radio National who have given us so much time throughout the year (in particular Paul Gough, Geoff Wood & Lucky Oceans) – and Frank Gutch Jnr of No Depression (USA), Blues & Roots Radio,  fRoots magazine (UK) and Fatea Magazine (UK), Tony Hillier (The Australian) and Bernard Zuel (Fairfax).  There are so many across the world who have started to feel like part of the “Declaration” family.

We recently had a lovely time at Major’s Creek Festival, one of our original stomping grounds. Our families came along for the ride – this year Kate’s kids turned 2 and 4, and Ruth’s son turned 5.  Our partners also had a busy 2015 – Bill Jackson released a new album recorded in Melbourne and recorded another in Nashville, USA, and Pete Wild released one live album, with two more in production – a studio album with The Only Ones (produced by Kate), and a live Kate & Pete duo album.

2016 will see Kate & Ruth at Newstead Live (Vic), Port Fairy Folk Music Festival (Vic), St Albans Folk Festival (NSW) and the Top Half Folk Festival (NT).
Keep an eye on the website, and follow us on social media for updates. We’ve just done some updates on our Bandcamp site too: we’re offering a Christmas package (get in quick if you want to make the Christmas post)! Our entire discography is also now available to download in one hit.

Lastly - Thanks so very, very much for being there with us – old friends and new! Happy and safe holidays to you and yours, and keep a thought in your hearts for those out there in need.  May 2016 be a year of peace.

Loads of love,
Kate & Ruth

It hasn’t been too long since our last ‘News’ post but so much has been happening it’s difficult to know where to begin!

fRoots:

Kate and I were thrilled to have ‘Declaration’ reviewed in the latest issue of fRoots Magazine (UK). Many thanks to David Kidman. (http://www.frootsmag.com/) See our 'Reviews' page to read.

In addition to the review we were honored to have 'Queen of Hearts' included on the fRoots compilation album and 'Father Adieu' featured on the fRoots radio playlist. We've been told we're only the second Australian act to have been included on an fRoots compilation album which is a HUGE honour to say the least!

Check it out if you've not listened before and consider becoming a member... http://www.bluesandrootsradio.com/

ABC RADIO NATIONAL RHYTHM DIVINE INTERVIEW: "The Folk Singer"

Earlier this year at the National Folk Festival in Canberra, we recorded an interview with Geoff Wood for 'The Rhythm Divine' on ABC Radio National. The interview explores folk music and spirituality.

"
There’s a great line in the recent Coen Brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis, about a Greenwich Village folksinger in 1961, where the young folkie himself declares: 'If it was never new, and it never gets old, then it's a folk song'. The film was fiction, but the quote rings true".

"Folk songs really do seem to be timeless, by distilling hard-won wisdom. And this week we'll meet two young Australian musicians doing their own distilling, musically of course, keeping tradition alive and exploring the deeper and darker sides of life through the lens of folksong - Kate Burke and Ruth Hazleton".

MELBOURNE CD LAUNCH - THURS 23 JULY @ The Spotted Mallard

WOW! What a night! We're both still spinning!

Above all, it was wonderful to be on stage with Luke Plumb again and share the night with so many old friends in Melbourne. Thanks so very much to all who came out and supported us. It was a very special occasion indeed. We had a guest fly from Perth for the occasion, and also friends from Central Victoria and Gippsland come to see the show. Seriously grateful to those of you who traveled so far!

Huge thanks also to Second Line Music & Peter Leman for organising the event, and also the John Flanagan Trio (with Liz Frencham and Dan Watkins) for performing a stunning support set. Fabulous musicians and singing!

We'll leave you with a few pics from the night and also a couple of YouTube links thanks to Bill Jackson and Liz Frencham.

Best wishes and lots of love from us both!

So here we are! Winter already (depending on your global positioning)!

We've been super-busy since the launch of 'Declaration'. In February we had a fantastic time performing at the Cobargo Folk Festival and Candelo Village Festival. Seems like a long time ago already. We were also supposed to be appearing at the St. Albans Folk Festival in late April, but unfortunately it was cancelled due to flooding in NSW. We hope that the community has recovered and hope to perform at St. Albans in future.

It was also a great joy to return to the National Folk Festival for the first time in years. Thank you all who attended a gig and bought a CD. What a great family is the 'Nash!' So many familiar faces and great music.

We've begun to get the new album out to radio and newspaper and so far have been receiving very positive feedback which we're very pleased about. We also have a few gigs coming up - you can check these out on the 'gigs' page. Very much excited to be joined by the illustrious Luke Plumb in Melbourne to launch 'Declaration' in late July. It will be a very special night and a rare performance with the three of us (AKA 'Team Dec').

LASTLY - an enormous thanks to all of you who have supported us, encouraged us, sent us wonderful messages and bought the new album. Greatly appreciated and so very lovely to be back doing what we love after so long away...

All the best,

Ruth & Kate

It's been a long time a-coming, and we are very excited to announce that our new album Declaration is now available for download or CD purchase here.

Declaration is a bold and stunning fifth album, featuring trademark vocal harmonies and intricate arrangements. Produced by Luke Plumb, 'Declaration' takes a contemporary approach to traditional music and lifts it to a whole new level.

“There’s a lot of bold material on the album in terms of both subject matter and treatment… I don’t think the album could ever be accused of being safe, of retreading familiar ground or of gently easing back into the saddle and that was one of our conclusions in the preparation stage - this had to be a real step further from the previous albums". – Luke Plumb, producer

Our new album “Declaration”, has been mastered by the superb Calum Malcolm in Scotland, and will be available shortly for download.  Recorded at various locations in Melbourne and at Sing Sing Studios, with artwork by Tim Meyen, it includes songs from across many genres and heralds an exciting and new collaborative era for us.   We will be releasing CD copies toward the end of March.  Exciting times!  Stay tuned… not long to go!
